Songs Of Ourselves

(In honor of the New Year, I keenly anticipate!)

When the time comes

And we have paid our dues on Earth

Or not,

Let it be said of us

That we sang songs of ourselves

Every once in a while

When we thought of the finish line we knew not.

In the moments we grieve

the ones lost

In the moments we ponder

the times lost

In the moments we contemplate

The existence of eternity or reality

Let it be said of us

That we sang songs of ourselves

Every once in a while

When we thought of the finish line we knew not.

In all our questions and frustrations

Of God and men,

Love and war

Truth and Life,

Let us continue to question

The questions that question our

Existence

But unquestionably

Let it be said of us

That we sang songs of ourselves

Every once in a while

When we thought of the finish line we knew not.

At the end of the matter

When we have come to our wit’s

End

The end of the road

The ends of our ropes

Let it be said of us

That we sang songs of ourselves

Every once in a while

When we thought of the finish line we knew not.

I know our elders say

That we must not blow our own trumpet

But it is also wisdom, not of this age,

To learn how to number our days

Or make them matter at all

Thus my prayer and fervent wish

Is that it be said of us

That we sang songs of ourselves

Every once in a while.

Even when we think of the finish line we know not.
